The elusive winter appears to be returning! I packed the field loops at Bechtel this morning for skating. The snow is thin, but skiable. Fingers crossed for a big dump to allow grooming in the woods and setting a track!
The 2018 Cookie Race, which was scheduled for January 21, has been cancelled because of low snow conditions and expected high temperatures.
Time trials will be run on Thursday, January 18 at the Rockway Golf Course in Kitchener. Events will begin at 6:30pm.
I groomed all the trails for both skate and classic this morning. Enjoy the fresh tracks before it gets warm on Thursday!
I’d like to request that everyone avoid skiing at Bechtel on Thursday to minimize damage to the trails. We’ll be hard at work over the weekend to get the trails back in top condition.
The racing group has been active over the Christmas break, and the Track Attack Development skiers have also been invited to sessions. All youth instructional sections will offer lessons starting Sunday January 7, from 1:30 until 3:30pm, at Bechtel Park.
The Cookie Race will be held on January 21 at Bechtel Park. All youth instructional skiers are automatically registered in the Cookie Race. For the race notice, please see our Race page. For the first time, the Cookie Race will have a ‘seniors’ category. The seniors events will serve as qualifiers for Ontario Senior Games. All adult skiers can enter the ‘seniors’ events, but only skiers age 55 or more can qualify for the Seniors Games.
Update (January 17, 2018): The 2018 Cookie Race has been cancelled because of low snow conditions and expected high temperatures.

WRNSC is pleased to present the first race of the 2018 Orion Race Series, The Cookie Race. All finishers will receive a cookie and a hot chocolate. We have selected courses and distances that are within the capabilities of all of our skiers. This is an introduction to ski racing for many of our skiers and we work to make it a positive experience for everyone.
The race will be held on Sunday, January 21.
We will be using an interval start and the race is free technique.
The race will be held at Bechtel Park, Waterloo. Racing will start at 2:30pm; registration opens at 1:30 pm for the Cookie Race and for the adult 5km time trial. (All youth members who are in WRNSC youth instructional programs are automatically registered.)
Categories are as follows:
– 250m Bunny (Registered in a Bunnyrabbit program)
– 450m Beginners/Basic (Registered in a beginners Jackrabbit program or a beginners/basic Track Attack program)
– 1km Atom (yob 2009 and earlier)
– 1.5K PeeWee (yob 2006-2008)
– 3.3K Midget (yob 2004-2005)
– 3.3km Juvenile (yob 2002-2003)
– 3.3km PN ambulatory
WRNSC is also pleased to run two events that serve as qualifiers for the Ontario Senior Games.
1. We will run a 5km ‘precision’ event, where adult competitors predict their finish time and then strive to come closest to their prediction. This event will start before the Cookie Race heats (time TBA).
2. We will also run a 5km ‘time trial’ for adult competitors at the end of the youth Cookie Race heats.
There is no charge for WRNSC youth members who are registered in instructional programs – race fees are included in their program fees
The race fee for other WRNSC members is $2.
The race fee for non-members is $5.
Renovated and set track throughout the network for classic and skating. The classic track is shallow in spots, especially the woods, as the base is very firm, making a deep track not quite possible, unless I use a pick-ax to loosen the snow more deeply. 🙂 Enjoy the skiing.
We were having technical difficulties with the website, so while grooming started just after Christmas, this is the first update.
I packed the entire Bechtel trail network for skating this morning. No classic track yet, but it will likely be set after the next snow. Expect parts of the trail to drift in with today’s high winds.
Get out there and enjoy the snow!
